What age group does youth training typically target?
There is no clearly defined age range for youth training. As a certified strength and conditioning coach, it is my professional belief that athletes should begin training as soon as they are capable. But as a parent, here are some things you can look out for that will let you know that your young athlete is ready.
- The ability to Focus – I’ve specialized in working with youth athletes of all ages and I can say from experience that not all 6 year old athletes are created equal. Some are butterfly chasers (kids who are easily distracted) and others are able to pick up coaching cues. Although there’s nothing wrong with either of these types of kids, the latter is usually ready for training at an earlier age. Butterfly kids just need a couple more years before they’re ready.
- High competitiveness – When a young athlete is competitive this often drives a level of focus that makes them capable of training at an earlier age. Not only will their competitiveness help keep them focused, but they will also give high effort because they are driven to win or be first.
Some gyms may have clearly defined age requirements before athletes can begin training. At my gym I recommend parents bring their daughter or son in to try out a session so we can get a feel for their ability to withstand training. Because there’s no clearly defined age group for youth training it really depends on the gym or trainer. Ultimately only the parents know at what age their child is ready or not based on the criteria listed above. Basing your decision on their level of focus and competitiveness helps not only the trainer, but allows parents to begin training at a time when it will be a fun and positive experience.
